5 foods you should definitely avoid before bed

If you’re looking for a good night’s sleep here are five foods you should definitely avoid before bed.

What you eat before you sleep has a huge impact on your nights sleep as your body has a harder time digesting certain foods when you’re lying down. Studies have shown a restless night's sleep not only makes you less productive the next day but can often contribute to weight gain.


Alcohol

Despite how sleepy alcohol can make you feel it actually prevents your body from going into the deep sleep it needs for proper rest and recovery. Alcohol can also lead to dehydration keeping you tossing and turning all night.  


Spicy Food

Although chillies are a great way to boost your metabolism and burn fat faster, eating spicy food right before bed could cause nightmares. Chillies contain capsaicin - the bit that makes them hot - which elevates your body temperature causing disruptions to your sleep cycle.


Ice cream

Good snack food this is not. The high fat content has a slow digestion rate, keeping your body working harder when you're asleep while the high sugar content will give you a spike in energy causing more awake time at night. Recent studies also suggest high amounts of sugar before bed can causes nightmares.


Celery

Although a great snack for weight loss celery is also a natural diuretic which means you’ll be up more times in the night to go to the loo, breaking your sleep cycle.


Chocolate

Like ice cream, chocolate has a high sugar and fat content but is also a natural source of stimulants such as caffeine and theobromine, known for making your heart race, leaving you wide awake.
