Hi Jon - good blog!  I know the Downslink at Henfield well, have done a charity ride along it for about 5 years.  We make it a bit of an adventure and carry on to Bramley where tradition now demands we sink a few pints and then bimble home.

Bungle Bear - keep going!  If you can get out 2 or 3 times a week it will make a big difference, maybe with the clocks going forward this weekend you can get an hour in during the evenings?

People on sportives are a mixed bag, like all people.  You will get the smug up their own *** kind, you will get the friendly, you may even get the too-friendly-leave-me alone-now type.

Thanks Olly. Since my post I plucked up the courage and did a 35 mile sportive. Loved it. Just need to book onto the next one now

Dont be afraid of doing a sportive. All shapes and sizes of riders and bikes join in and the atmospher is friendly. you always get a few negative people where ever you are but the vast majority are welcoming.

Thats super mate. I too am trying to loose weight. I started in October last year. Due to my route to work (the A5) I stopped mid November. Got scared if lorries and poor weather.

I bought a road bike in January. My biggest ride is 24 miles. Haven't seen much weight loss as yet. Nice to hear that cycling does work. Thanks for the blog has given me the faith to carry on.

How did you find people on the sportives? I have fear I will be laughed at cause I'm 19 stone. Some cyclists are great and wave, however, some are bloody ignorant and look at you like you shouldn't be participating in their past time
